, ,

Founded in 1983, Blackburn Architects, P.C. is a multifaceted planning and design firm with a wide range of experience in projects of every scale. As a firm, we offer senior level involvement and continuity of staff throughout all projects.

Blackburn Architects is nationally and internationally renowned for their special expertise in the planning, design, and preservation of equestrian establishments, from private residences and farms with breeding and training spaces to colleges and universities with show jumping and research facilities. Having planned and/or designed over 300 equestrian facilities throughout the United States and abroad, the firm has developed a reputation for its unique use of natural light and ventilation and the sensitive placement of each structure in harmony with the natural characteristics of the land. Blackburn is committed to “green” building design and actively incorporates renewable elements in each project.

The firm’s principal architect, John Blackburn authored Healthy Stables by Design, a book that documents his design philosophy with 14 representative projects. Each project exemplifies how Mr. Blackburn’s approach not only meets the needs of the owners, but also creates safe and healthy environments for their horses to thrive. He has won several awards for various projects and is an active member of the Maryland Horse Council, the New York Horse Council, the American Horse Council, and the Equine Land Conservation Resource.

FlyAway Stables is a multi-disciplinary equine facility located in Middleburg, the heart of Virginia’s horse country.  We offer boarding, training and lessons for all ages, but we have a soft spot for the adult novice, the returning rider and the “weekend warrior”.  We specialize in helping adult riders who might have lost their confidence and are seeking to redevelop new trust with their horse.

Whether your goal is a relaxing walkabout, riding the perfect half pass, the thrill of the chase, or jumping the big fences, we are dedicated to helping each horse and every rider achieve their full potential.

Using classical horsemanship, positive reinforcement, the Tellington Method (TTEAM/TTouch), and effective, humane techniques, we develop a step by step plan to help your horse perform at their best.  Our stress-free training expands your horse’s ability to learn and desire to cooperate with the rider.

I provide Pulsed Electromagnetic Field Therapy. PEMF therapy works at the cellular level to produce optimum cellular energy and health which is necessary for proper or accelerated healing of every anatomical part of the body. If we help the cells, we can help everything! A pulsating magnetic field or PEMF is said to produce one main result: stimulating cell metabolism and increasing oxygenation. This action is thought to cause a chain of processes in the body that leads to improvement of health without side effects. Some of the effects of PEMF are: increased circulation, enhanced muscle function, decreased inflammation and pain, increased tensile strength in ligaments, increased healing of skin wounds, enhanced capillary formation, accelerated nerve regeneration and bone healing, less tissue death, stress reduction, and bone healing. In equines, PEMF therapy can be used for: back pain, abscesses and bruised foot soles, muscle soreness/fatigue/atrophy, stifle osteoarthritis and synovitis, fetlocks and pastern joint osteoarthritis and synovitis, white line disease, carpal pain and bursitis, flexor and extensor tendonitis, suspensory ligament and ligament branch desmitis, sesamoiditis, coffin joint synovitis, navicular syndrome and navicular bone bursitis, poll osteoarthritis and nuchal ligament calcification, EPM, Anhidrosis, Cushings disease, laminitis, and founder.

To see how horses have responded to the therapy, please visit the Shady Grove Magna Wave Facebook page at https://www.facebook.com/shadygrovemagnawave/

Riding to Recovery
Horses and healing for sick children
Riding to Recovery is a program now open under the direction of Lucia DiBenedetto at Stonelea Farm in Aldie, Virginia, providing emotional and spiritual healing using the horse. This program is dedicated to serving children with illnesses versus disabilities as one would find at a traditional therapeutic riding center. Children faced with acute illnesses, where medical treatments and endless hospital visits are an integral part of their life, need a mental as well as physical reprieve from their pain.

Riding to Recovery provides children with a much-needed pleasurable outlet and gives them an identity outside of being ill. Horseback riding, along with the close relationships children build through working with horses, is a life-affirming journey toward wellness.

Emerald Ribbons – Loudoun County Preservation & Conservation Coalition
P O Box 226
Round Hill, VA
20142

In response to strong public input and a shortage of parks and trails in Loudoun County, a committee of Coalition members proposes Emerald Ribbons, a countywide interconnected system of linear parks and trails.  Such a widely accessible network, built along streams and other natural corridors, can create an asset of enormous benefit to Loudoun County, raising property values, improving health and quality of life, attracting business investment and providing protection for natural areas and drinking water sources.
The proposed countywide system would link east and west, north and south through a trails network that would allow residents and visitors to enjoy Loudoun’s natural beauty.

All my life I have loved horses and sought to learn all that I can about them.  It is my hope to share my passion for horses with you, so you too can enjoy these amazing creatures in the beautiful Virginia countryside.   Over the years, I have participated in eventing, horse showing, horse racing, pony club and fox hunting.  I have reschooled former race horses and have taught many people to ride (including my children).  I have taught therapeutic riding to people with a variety of challenges and am an Equine Specialist in Mental Health and Learning.    With the exception of 10 years that I spent working in the Thoroughbred racing and breeding industry in Kentucky, I have lived my entire life in Virginia.    There are lots of ways to be involved with horses in Virginia and I want to show you how.    Virginia truly is for horse lovers!
