Blackburn Architects, PC
Founded in 1983, Blackburn Architects, P.C. is a multifaceted planning and design firm with a wide range of experience in projects of every scale. As a firm, we offer senior level involvement and continuity of staff throughout all projects.
Blackburn Architects is nationally and internationally renowned for their special expertise in the planning, design, and preservation of equestrian establishments, from private residences and farms with breeding and training spaces to colleges and universities with show jumping and research facilities. Having planned and/or designed over 300 equestrian facilities throughout the United States and abroad, the firm has developed a reputation for its unique use of natural light and ventilation and the sensitive placement of each structure in harmony with the natural characteristics of the land. Blackburn is committed to “green” building design and actively incorporates renewable elements in each project.
The firm’s principal architect, John Blackburn authored Healthy Stables by Design, a book that documents his design philosophy with 14 representative projects. Each project exemplifies how Mr. Blackburn’s approach not only meets the needs of the owners, but also creates safe and healthy environments for their horses to thrive. He has won several awards for various projects and is an active member of the Maryland Horse Council, the New York Horse Council, the American Horse Council, and the Equine Land Conservation Resource.
